Clean Energy Training Program

Since 2004, NYSERDA has provided photovoltaic(PV) installer training across the state. NYSERDA’s Clean Energy Training Program started with a $1 million investment to develop nationally accredited PV training facilities, working with: Hudson Valley Community College, SUNY Delhi, Ulster County Board of Cooperative Educational Services(BOCES), Bronx Community College, SUNY Farmingdale, SUNY Alfred, and four local International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) training facilities (Latham, Watertown, Harriman, and Niagara Falls).

In 2009, NYSERDA invested an additional $4 million in six clean energy training teams consisting of twenty-eight training centers. The new training centers, found below, include community colleges, four-year colleges, building trades, and BOCES throughout the state. These teams will be offering training in the following clean energy technology areas: solar water heating, small and large wind, geothermal, fuel cells, and PV. Additional programs will be developed in 2009, and will include training for anaerobic digestion systems.

NYSERDA continues to emphasize quality instruction in its funding support for training programs. For instance, institutions must work toward training programs accredited by independent, third party entities, if available. Several of NYSERDA’s training partners have received accreditation from the Institute for Sustainable Power for their PV training programs. Programs that lead to national certification are also supported. Our energy efficiency training facilities teach curriculum that is Building Performance Institute (BPI) recognized and helps students pursuing BPI certification. NYSERDA also assists participating PV installers to obtain certification by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners.

Finally, construction has started for TEC-SMART, the Training and Education Center for Semiconductor Manufacturing and Alternative and Renewable Technologies, developed by Hudson Valley Community College and NYSERDA. The training center, located at the Saratoga Technology + Energy Park (STEP), in Malta, NY, will prepare skilled technicians to meet the demands in growing industrial sectors that develop and manufacture semiconductors, photovoltaics, wind turbines, geothermal products, alternative fuels, and energy-efficient buildings.
