Programmable Thermostats
One of the easiest ways to save energy is to use an ENERGY STAR® qualified programmable thermostat. They offer pre-programmed settings to regulate the temperature in your home. By properly setting the thermostat to meet your needs, you can save over $200 a year without sacrificing the comfort.
Product Facts:
- An ENERGY STAR programmable thermostat can automatically turn down your heat or air-conditioning at night and when you are not home, and can be programmed with six different temperature settings a day.
- The two main types of programmable thermostat are:
- Electromechanical, featureing pegs or sliding bars and is easy to program.
- Digital with multiple settings, overrides, and adjustments for daylight-saving time.
- Additional features include backlit displays, touchpad screen programming, voice and/or phone programming, hold/vacation features, air filter change indicators, malfunction indicators, and adaptive/smart recovery features.
Tips:
- You can typically set your thermostat at 68°F in winter and 78°F in summer to save money and maintain comfort. Setting the thermostat lower/higher (depending on the season) at times when you won’t be home will save even more money.
- Install your thermostat away from direct sunlight, drafts, doorways, skylights and windows to avoid “ghost readings” that do not reflect the actual temperature of the room. Make sure you always place the thermostat where it is easily accessible.
- For every degree you set back the thermostat when you leave the house for eight hours or while you sleep, you save approximately one percent on your heating bill. If you lower your thermostat by one degree for 24 hours, you will reduce your heating costs by three percent.
