Ways to Save with ENERGY STAR® Qualified Lighting

Ways to Save

Switch to ENERGY STAR qualified lighting

Switching to ENERGY STAR qualified lighting is one of the easiest and quickest ways you can save energy and money at home while doing something good for the environment too.

Energy

meter

Standard incandescent light bulbs waste energy. The energy they consume produces more heat than light. Energy efficient lighting can use up to 75 percent less energy so switching to energy efficient bulbs like ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) is an easy first step to curb your kilowatts. The more bulbs you switch, the more energy you’ll save.

You can increase your energy savings with ENERGY STAR qualified light fixtures. They use 25 percent less energy than standard fixtures, come in hundreds of decorative styles for a variety of applications and offer convenient features such as dimming options and motion sensors.

Money

Not only does ENERGY STAR qualified lighting reduce your electricity costs, you’ll also save money because you won’t need to replace the bulbs as often. For example, just one ENERGY STAR qualified CFL lasts up to 10 times longer than a traditional light bulb and can save you $70 over the life of the bulb. Switch out your five most commonly used incandescent bulbs to ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs and save up to $50 each year!

How much more can you save? Use ENERGY STAR's light bulb energy savings calculator to find out.

Environment

Making small changes at home is a great way to fight climate change. That’s because the average home contributes twice the greenhouse gas emissions as the average car. If each household in New York switched just one incandescent bulb to an ENERGY STAR qualified CFL, New Yorkers could prevent more than 562 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions over the life of the bulbs. That’s the environmental equivalent of taking 40,000 cars off the road for a year.
