Boilers

Whether gas or oil, ENERGY STARĀ® qualified boilers use about 10% less energy than a standard boiler. ENERGY STAR qualified boilers achieve greater efficiency with improved features, such as electric ignition, new combustion technology that extracts more heat from the same amount of fuel and sealed combustion that uses outside air to fuel the burner.

Facts and Product Knowledge:

  • ENERGY STAR qualified boilers have an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) rating of 85% or greater. The higher the AFUE rating the more efficient the boiler.
  • Proper sizing of heating equipment is critical to efficient operation
  • Electric ignition available on gas-fired boilers eliminates the need to have a pilot light burning all the time

The NY Home Performance with ENERGY STARĀ® program utilizes Building Performance Institute (BPI) Accredited Contractors for the installation of ENERGY STAR products and services. They are trained and certified in proper installation techniques to ensure the consumer receives the full benefit of their investment.

Tips:

  • Identify BPI Accredited contractors who are knowledgeable about product and installation of ENERGY STAR qualified boilers.
  • Have oil-fired boilers serviced by a BPI Accredited heating contractor annually and gas-fired boilers every two years to maintain system performance.
  • Use programmable thermostats.
  • Consider having a comprehensive home assessment performed by a participating BPI Accredited Home Performance contractor who can identify and repair a variety of home energy efficiency problems, including poor insulation and air leaks, which will reduce the performance of home heating equipment.

Use a timer or programmable thermostat on your air conditioner.

Only wash and dry full loads of laundry.
