Buyer’s Guide for Dishwashers
What you should know before buying a dishwasher:
- Ask for an ENERGY STAR model. When buying a dishwasher, request an ENERGY STAR qualified model to ensure that you will receive the greatest energy savings.
- Check the Energy Factor. The higher the Energy Factor, the more efficient the dishwasher. Currently, all ENERGY STAR qualified dishwashers must have a minimum Energy Factor of 0.65.
- Check the yellow Energy Guide Label. Use this label to determine the model’s energy use, compare the energy use of similar models, and estimate annual operating costs. How to Use the Energy Guide Label.
Energy Saving Tips
Follow these helpful guidelines to boost your energy savings to the max!
- Load it up. Dishwashers use about the same amount of energy and water regardless of the number of dishes inside, so run full loads whenever possible.
- Run the dishwasher early in the morning or late at night to reduce the stress on the electric grid when demand is greatest during the day.
- Select the no-heat drying option. This produces good drying results with less energy.
- Turn down your water heater thermostat. 120°F is fine.
- Choose the right size dishwasher for your household needs and choose a unit with several wash cycle selections.
- Scrape don’t rinse. Rinsing dishes can use up to 20 gallons of water before the dishes are even loaded. Save yourself the rinsing—just scrape food off dishes. ENERGY STAR qualified dishwashers and today’s detergents are designed to do the cleaning so you don’t have to. If your dirty dishes sit overnight, use your dishwasher’s rinse feature. It uses a fraction of the water that rinsing by hand uses.
